Pastoral reorganisation

The Thame Benefice, comprising nine parishes, is proposing to formally unite three of its parishes—St Mary the Virgin (Thame), Barley Hill (Thame), and St Catherine’s (Towersey)—into a single parish. This proposal does not extend to the other rural parishes in the benefice.

Bringing three parishes together

Since the Covid lockdowns, these three parishes have collaborated more closely, sharing worship services and resources through an informal arrangement. Despite operating as one in practice, they have maintained separate legal and financial structures, which has become burdensome. Unification is intended to streamline governance, reduce duplication, and enhance the church’s mission and community presence.

Each of the three PCCs has strongly supported the proposal following consultations and meetings. A public consultation is now underway, with meetings planned and a Frequently Asked Questions resource available, inviting questions from the community.
